Spray Tanning: Do’s and Don’ts

We’ve all seen the beautiful natural tans that some people achieve effortlessly. Those who are as pale as a fluffy cloud on a summer day wish we could look bronzed. A spray tan makes the beautiful, bronzed look of summer available to us year-round, even if we would turn into a boiled lobster in the sun. Here are some do’s and don’ts for enjoying the look of a day in the sun without the inherent risks of sunbathing.

The Do’s

First, let’s look at what you should do if you plan to get a spray tan

Exfoliate

Exfoliate thoroughly before your appointment. You should do this at least 24 hours ahead of your appointment time. Exfoliating is a process that removes any dead skin cells from your body, leaving an even tanning surface. Ensure your exfoliating scrub is water-based, so it doesn’t interfere with your spray tan.

Wax or Shave

You want a smooth surface for tanning. Shave or wax any areas you plan to have sprayed with tanning solution a minimum of eight hours before your tanning appointment. It’s preferable to shave 24 hours in advance, but that isn’t always feasible. Avoid waxing or shaving for at least 24 hours after you get your spray tan.

Ask Questions

Address any questions you may have about the process before your appointment begins. You should also discuss any uneasiness you may feel about the process with the technician. The technician can answer questions about the process, so you feel more confident with it.

The Don’ts

Since we’ve covered a few do’s, let’s talk about some don’ts.

Get A Facial

Facials open the pores on your skin, leading to the look of blackheads if you get one immediately before a spray tan. Ideally, it would be best if you got a facial more than 24 hours before your spray tan session. It’s better to wait until any irritation from the facial has subsided.

Use Acne Medicine

Topical and oral acne medications can affect the quality of your spray tan. They typically work by drying out the skin. Using a spray tan following acne medication can have uneven tanning results.

Final Thoughts

This list of do’s and don’ts is by no means comprehensive. Speaking with your technician is the best way to get a complete list of requirements. Contact Prive Beauty Lab with any questions you might have before your appointment.
